History of the “Old Stone House”

History of the “Old Stone House”

Roughly in the heart of the oldest part of Riverside Cemetery stands a stone house that has been boarded up since 1904.  No one seems to know the exact date that the Stone House was built or who designed it, but we do know that it was constructed with limestone from a Colorado quarry. It was the second office and holding tomb for the cemetery. It was probably built within a few years of the cemetery opening, and appears in a photograph taken around 1885.

The first building at Riverside was built in 1876; the year the cemetery opened and was used as a receiving vault that could hold up to 20 bodies. That building was near the present location of the Stone House, and it was later demolished. The Stone House became the cemetery receiving vault, and also its office until the new office was built in 1904 as part of the chapel and crematory.

Designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, the Stone House is a single story building, which measures approximately 18 feet wide by 32 feet long and includes a cellar.  The roof is steeply pitched and is clad with grayish green slate. The Stone House originally became the office and receiving tomb for the cemetery but was possibly also used as a chapel. After the construction of the current office, chapel and crematory in 1904 it was probably used only as a holding tomb. In 1927 a newspaper report stated that the building was being used as the headquarters of the cemetery groundskeepers. During 2004 there was some concern about the roof leaking and a cap was placed over the original roof with funding from the State Historical Fund.

Plans for a complete renovation of the Stone House are being developed by the Fairmount Heritage Foundation; the building will be used for meetings, lectures and educational programs.
